Influencer Bitmama Accused of 22 Million Fraud Unveiling a Crypto Scam

Valeria “Bitmama” Fedyakina, a popular Russian social media influencer, is facing accusations of embezzling $22 million worth of cryptocurrency. She has been charged with attempting to commit cross-border internet payment fraud against Russian businessmen, a crime that carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
Initially, there were allegations that Fedyakina had used the money to fund the Ukrainian military or other militia groups. However, she is currently only being charged with defrauding individuals within the crypto marketplace.
Fedyakina is accused of swindling four Nigerian businessmen by enticing them with the opportunity to exchange cash across borders using Bitcoin technology. This method has gained popularity in Russia, particularly after the imposition of sanctions due to the conflict in Ukraine.
Posing as an international businesswoman, the influencer claimed she could transfer money to different countries using crypto assets. She also convinced her victims to invest in a fake energy transport plan that promised high returns. Instead of fulfilling these promises, Fedyakina allegedly stole the money, resulting in significant investment losses for the businessmen.
Dismissed are the speculations of treason, which suggested that Fedyakina was aiding the Ukrainian military. Some media outlets have not reported these charges, and according to the Russian state media outlet TASS, the current charges are limited to economic offenses and scams.
Fedyakina was arrested while pregnant and has since given birth, which may potentially lead to a more lenient sentence considering her new status.
This case highlights the prevalence of scams in the crypto space, particularly when large sums of money are involved in cross-border transactions. Fraudsters often pose as legitimate businesses to deceive their victims.
As the use of cryptocurrencies continues to grow in sanctioned nations like Russia, it is crucial for the industry to enhance its security and precautionary measures.
