Recent Crypto Hacks Result in 41 Million in Losses

Welcome to this week’s Crypto Hack Weekly Report, your comprehensive roundup of the latest hacks and scams shaking up the crypto world. This edition covers three major incidents: the breach of Authy’s two-factor authentication service, an attack on Bittensor wallets, and the compromise of Sydney Sweeney’s X account by crypto scammers. Let’s delve deeper into these alarming developments.

Authy Breach: $33 Million Phone Numbers Stolen
Authy, a prominent provider of two-factor authentication, fell victim to a significant breach where hackers exploited an unpatched API interface to pilfer the phone numbers of 33 million users. This breach poses heightened risks of phishing and SIM swapping for affected individuals.

Twilio, Authy’s parent company, promptly acknowledged the breach and has advised all users to update their Android and iOS apps immediately to safeguard against potential security threats. Vigilance against phishing attempts is strongly advised.

Bittensor Wallets Drained: $8 Million TAO Tokens Affected
Individual users of Bittensor’s wallet software suffered substantial losses when hackers infiltrated cryptocurrency wallets containing TAO tokens, amounting to approximately $8 million. This breach resulted in the disappearance of around 32,000 tokens.

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT attributes the attack to a likely theft of private keys. Bittensor has identified that affected users were targeted through a phishing Bittensor package uploaded to the Python Package Index (PyPi). The method of delivery of this malicious package remains under investigation.

Sydney Sweeney’s X Account Compromised by Crypto Scammers
In a high-profile incident involving a celebrity account, Sydney Sweeney, a rising star in America, had her X account hacked by crypto scammers. The stolen credentials were used to promote a fake Solana-based meme currency falsely associated with the “Euphoria” series actor.

The compromised account also posted misleading information about Sweeney hosting a live session on X Spaces to discuss the token. Additionally, fake announcements of a giveaway and token burn were circulated. Fortunately, these deceptive posts have since been removed from Sweeney’s account.

These incidents underscore the growing threats of large-scale data breaches, wallet compromises, and social media scams in the crypto space. They emphasize the importance of both robust network security measures and user vigilance in safeguarding accounts. As we continue to monitor and report on developments in the world of crypto hacks, stay informed and stay safe.
